A: The time it takes to install flooring can vary depending on; the type of product used; the amount of preparation needed and the size shape of the area. In most cases it is no problem to completely transform a room from carpet to new hardwood and baseboard in just a single day!
2. Will there be any odour in my home after the installation?
A: One great aspect of using prefinished hardwood is that there is no off gassing like with carpet, and no smelly finishes are applied after installation. It is the healthiest type of new flooring for your home!
3. When can I walk on my newly installed floor?
A: If your new floor is nailed down or a click together system, you can walk on it immediately. If your flooring has been glued down or tongue and groove glued, the floor needs to setup overnight before it is ready for regular traffic.
4. Do you take out the old carpet or do I?
A: We offer the service of removing and disposing of old carpet at a very reasonable price. Some homeowners prefer the hands on approach of tearing out the carpet on their own, however if you choose to remove the carpet yourself, the carpet tack and staples must all be removed from the sub-floor as well.
5. Can I reuse the same baseboard that I already have?
A: Chances are if you are going to upgrade the style of your home with new flooring, you will also want to upgrade baseboard. Modern baseboard has increased in size and must be a minimum of 5/8” thick to cover the expansion space around the perimeter of the room. The height of the baseboard is of personal preference. The price of new baseboard varies by profile and material, but the cost of new baseboard is relatively inexpensive.
6. Can the furniture stay or must it be removed for the installation?
A: Furniture and Appliances must be removed from all areas that will be floored. It is best that shelves and mantles are cleared of breakables in case of vibrations during the installation process. If you are unable to move certain pieces on your own, we can estimate an appropriate moving fee into the cost of the job, on a case by case basis.
7. What if I scratch or damage my new floor?
A: Hardwood flooring is a natural product that in time will see signs of daily life with some blemishes such as small scratches, and dents. This is considered normal and is not of major concern. However, if large gouges bother you, there are options to reduce or eliminate them. Wood fillers, touch up pens and hardwood crayons can soften the look of damage for very little money. If needed, for a fee, individual boards can be removed and seamlessly replaced in most circumstances.
8. Will my pet’s claws scratch the floor?
A: Depending on the species and finish of the floor most pets including small dogs or cats will not show marks on the floor. If larger dogs are involved there are specific species and finish textures we recommend. Please feel free to call us for more information.
9. Will flooring change colour over time?
A: Hardwood flooring does change colour (usually darkening) over time. It is part of the oxidization process, and adds to the richness and beauty of the floor. Certain species, especially exotic and cherry woods, have a tendency to do this more than others, and exposure to direct sunlight, can quicken the process. In most cases the changes of colour should subside after one year. Area rugs will prevent certain areas from oxidizing, so it is best that area rugs are moved or removed periodically.
10. How should I clean and care for my new floor?
A: Hardwood flooring requires little effort to maintain, and if properly maintained will last a lifetime. It can be vacuumed with a soft brush head or swept with a dry mop. Soiled floors can be cleaned with appropriate hardwood specific cleaning kits. DO NOT USE WATER TO CLEAN A HARDWOOD FLOOR AS IT CAN WARP AND DAMAGE THE FLOOR. Another tip to maintain your floor is to stick on felt pads to the bottom of each piece of furniture. When moving furniture it is best to lift and carefully place each piece in its desired spot rather than sliding or dragging it across the floor.
